Restoration & Rebinding

Bring us your tired, sad and broken treasures and let me or my associate,

Kate Murdoch, give you an estimate and treatment proposal.

Kate Murdoch has nearly 20 years experience in book restoration.

Books arrive in all sorts of conditions.  This large family Bible’s spine has

become detached from the boards.

This “Home Physician”  has lost some of its spine leather and the

sides are badly scuffed.

A large 19th C ledger in desperate need of  some TLC.

It needs resewing.

Broken endpapers.

The corners need rebuilding and the leather in the binding has completely deteriorated.

This 18th  Latin Bible has been rebacked with new leather on the spine.

Here Kate is tooling the new spine to match the original.

Tooling the date at the bottom of the spine.

The finished spine with labels and tooling over the bands.

Kate tools the spine of a new leather binding in period style.

This new spine has been carefully dyed to match the boards.

Here  Kate has elegantly dyed and integrated the new leather on the spine.

The finished product.

The family Bible has had its corners recovered.  The original leather

will be sealed down over the new.

Finishing touches on a repaired corner.

“Letters from Nova Scotia” has been rebacked with leather.  With the original spine back in place, all that remains is to touch up the colour.

These Victorian cloth bindings have been resewn on recessed cords

using the original sewing stations.

Brought back from the dead.

Handmade Japanese paper has been used to rehinge these cover boards.

“Heidi” gets new hinges worked carefully under the old materials.

Another successful cloth rebacking.
